a
small clip from the movie
-------- windows------------------mac--
what
made you want to become a director?
probably early 80's b-movies. hot
dog the movie, class
of 1984, i didnt get into blockbusters til i was older..
actually, . i was scared of e.t, movies that were on that old channel
'preview' we didnt get cable til like 1990. then when, i got older,
and more into sports, i kind of got off the nerd thing. then i saw
nfl films, the old ones with facendas voice. and I realized sports
and film could work together like i never imagined. after that,
college, artsy films, you know the drill. anyway, ill enjoy a blockbuster
as much as the next guy now.
how
did you get started?
when i was 14 i used a sony handy-cam and made several small features,
and edited them on a vcr. most of them were parodies like 'robin
hood, men in tights'. i remember we did 'thunderfart' a take on
the val kilmer movie. we had some good special effects for the equipment
we had. smoke bombs, miniatures. cool stuff for 14 year olds.
did you go to film school? if so, which one?
not in the classic sense. i took night classes at boston film and
video while i was still a freelance graphic designer. 15 hour days.
it was pretty intense, but i met some cool people, and some not
so cool teachers. it recently closed, but i think film-shack from
boston is reopening it.
is
going to film school necessary to become a director?
it depends on the person and the film school. most of the greatest
filmmakers, all through film history, never once set foot in a film
school. ultimately, the best thing is to start making films. one
learns most by doing. nowadays, the ability to shoot and edit digital
video affordably is available to most people without the necessity
of enrolling in a film school.
which
artists inspire you, whom do you draw from?
everyting, i mean litterally. music, movies, the red sox saga, the
patriots, even the yankees and their continued dominace... there's
an essence of america in that team... everything continually inspires
me. however, certain people spring to mind that have been, and will
continue to be, a source of perpetual inspiration. in no particular
order, these are: steven speilberg, martic scorsese, paul thomas
anderson, janes addiction, metallica, daft punk, tarantino, bill
murray, the farrely brothers, the cohen brothers, the waichowski
brothers, the hughes brothers, brooks brothers, my family, friends
like neal mccarthy, my buddy adam and his 3-legged dog patience,
hunter thompson, bryan singer, kubrick, bugs bunny, the history
channel, comic books, brett ratner, the list goes on...
