i guess for many budding directors, video is the best way to go at first. its cheap, you can make mistakes, and cameras are everywhere. once i went to film school at night, i was able to get some real video jobs. one, directing and editing a bartending video, and another hosting and producing a tv show. the links are above. currently ,the video is selling, and the show is being pitched all over the east coast.
